ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has issued its final decision and official order in the case related to the broadcast of a sensitive documentary by Geo News, marking the conclusion of regulatory proceedings against the television channel.
In this regard, as per the official order, the 15-day suspension of Geo News transmissions will conclude at 12:00 midnight tonight, allowing the channel to resume its regular broadcast operations after serving the suspension period imposed by the regulator.
The PEMRA has directed Geo News to pay a fine of Rs10 million. The financial penalty forms part of the authority’s disciplinary action over the matter, as outlined in the final decision.
The order also includes a significant directive regarding employees who were dismissed by Geo News in connection with the case. The affected individuals will not be eligible for employment with any other media organization operating in Pakistan after the implementation of the order.
The regulator stated that the decision was made following the completion of legal and regulatory proceedings under the applicable media laws and regulations.
The authority maintained that compliance with the Code of Conduct and broadcast regulations is essential for ensuring responsible journalism and safeguarding the public interest.
The channel is also required to comply with all conditions outlined in the regulator’s final order, including payment of the imposed fine and adherence to future regulatory requirements.
The case attracted significant attention within Pakistan’s media industry, with journalists, media organizations, and legal experts closely monitoring the regulatory proceedings and their potential implications for the country’s broadcast sector.
As of the issuance of the final order, neither Geo News nor its management has publicly commented on the contents of the decision. Any future legal challenge or appeal, if filed, will proceed in accordance with the relevant laws and judicial procedures.
The PEMRA decision indicates the formal conclusion of the authority’s action in the matter, while broader discussions on media regulation, editorial responsibility, and compliance with broadcasting standards are expected to continue among stakeholders in Pakistan’s media landscape.
