ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has forecast intermittent pre-monsoon rainfall across various parts of Pakistan from today until July 3, warning that the combination of intense heat and expected rainfall could significantly increase the risk of glacier-related hazards, flash floods, and landslides in the country’s northern regions.
In this regard, persistently high temperatures are likely to accelerate glacier melting in the mountainous areas of Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
The authority cautioned that the rapid melting, coupled with pre-monsoon showers, may cause sudden rises in water levels in rivers, streams, and seasonal waterways.
The disaster management authority also warned of the possibility of Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOFs), flash flooding, and landslides in vulnerable mountainous areas.
So far, such incidents could pose serious threats to local communities, infrastructure, and tourists visiting northern destinations during the summer season.
The NDMA advised residents and visitors in high-risk districts, including Hunza, Nagar, Ghizer, Skardu, Shigar, Ghanche, Kharmang, Astore, Diamer, Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, and Swat, to remain vigilant and strictly follow safety advisories issued by the relevant authorities.
The authority urged the public to avoid unnecessary travel near rivers, streams, glacial lakes, and riverbanks during the forecast period. People living in vulnerable areas have also been advised to stay informed about weather updates and immediately report any emergency situation to the concerned authorities.
Meanwhile, provincial disaster management authorities have been directed to remain on high alert and ensure preparedness for any potential emergency. Relevant departments have been instructed to closely monitor the evolving weather conditions and maintain readiness to respond promptly to any untoward incidents.
The NDMA has focused on that timely precautionary measures and public cooperation will play a vital role in minimizing the impact of any weather-related emergencies.
