WASHINGTON : In a historic address to the US Congress on Tuesday, Britain’s King Charles III condemned the recent attack at the White House press dinner, declaring that “this act of violence will never succeed” and that democracies “will remain united to protect their people.”
The King, making his first speech before a joint session of Congress since ascending the throne, did not provide specific details about the attack but used the moment to underscore the resilience of democratic institutions in the face of threats.
Calling the partnership between Europe and the United States “more important today than ever,” the King drew parallels to the unity that emerged after the September 11 attacks, arguing that the same resolve is now needed to defend Ukraine against Russian aggression.
“The Western alliance must remain intact for peace in Ukraine,” Charles told assembled lawmakers. “This war is testing NATO’s resolve like never before. An unwavering commitment is needed to defend Ukraine so that a real, just and lasting peace can be ensured.”
The King also reflected on the enduring bond between Britain and the United States, cautioning that the alliance “cannot rest on past successes alone.”
“Despite all the differences of the past, Britain and the United States have found common paths,” he said. “Our alliance is one of the greatest in history.”
In a broad appeal to American legislators, Charles stressed the urgent need to promote environmental protection, humanitarianism, and respect for religions. In what he described as “current uncertain times,” defending democratic values such as tolerance and freedom, he said, “is more important than ever.”
The address was met with sustained applause, though several lawmakers later expressed confusion over the King’s reference to a White House press dinner attack, which officials have not confirmed
