WASHINGTON: US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said that Iran has been accused of using the Strait of Hormuz as an “economic nuclear weapon” against the world.
It was stated in an interview that no agreement with Iran would be possible without addressing its nuclear programme.
Iran was said to be highlighting its ability to disrupt up to 25% of global energy supplies passing through the Strait of Hormuz. Concerns were raised that the situation could become more dangerous if nuclear capability were acquired.
It was further stated that Iran seeks to achieve strategic immunity through nuclear capability, which could strengthen aligned groups across the region.
Allegations were also made that Iran aims to expand its influence beyond its borders through links with regional actors.
Iran’s leadership ideology was described as a major obstacle to any agreement. It was suggested that Tehran is seeking temporary relief due to internal pressures and attempting to gain time through negotiations.
It was stated that, in the absence of a deal, the next course of action would be determined by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Separately, international media reports have indicated that Iran has proposed reopening the Strait of Hormuz and reducing tensions in exchange for sanctions relief. Discussions on the nuclear programme were suggested to be deferred under the proposal.
