BARCELONA : Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets across Catalonia on Saturday to mark the 78th anniversary of the Nakba, expressing solidarity with the Palestinian people and condemning Israeli military operations in Gaza. Rallies, marches, and symbolic acts of protest were organized by a coalition of social, human rights, and pro-Palestinian groups, drawing participants from diverse backgrounds and nationalities.
The largest gathering took place at 6:00 PM in Barcelona’s central Plaza Catalunya. Attendees, including human rights activists, political and social figures, as well as members of the Pakistani and broader Muslim communities, waved Palestinian flags and chanted slogans against ongoing Israeli attacks and what they termed systematic human rights violations.
In a parallel action in Tarragona, a unique “cacerolada” (pots and pans protest) was held at noon at the Balcó del Mediterrani. Protesters banged kitchenware to draw the international community’s attention to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, demanding urgent action.
Speakers at the events highlighted that 78 years after the Nakba—which refers to the mass displacement of Palestinians during the 1948 Arab-Israeli war—Palestinians continue to face oppression, displacement, aggression, and a severe humanitarian crisis. Organizers criticized the silence of the international community, arguing that inaction has worsened the situation.
Protest organizers issued formal demands calling on international bodies to take immediate and practical measures, including an unconditional ceasefire in Gaza, unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid, and the protection of unarmed civilians.
Appealing for mass participation, organizers said they were encouraged by the large turnout and reiterated that the demonstrations were a stand for peace, justice, and fundamental human rights.
