Inside the Deadly Bannu Police Post Attack

BANNU: A devastating suicide blast targeted Fateh Khel Police Post near Bannu Cantt on the night of May 9, causing the collapse of the main building and resulting in the martyrdom of 15 police personnel, while three others sustained injuries.

Security officials stated that the attacker used an explosive-laden Zaranj rickshaw which detonated after being challenged outside the post.

Most of the casualties occurred after officers were trapped beneath the rubble following the powerful explosion.

Security sources identified the Kharji Gul Bahadur network and its affiliate IMP as the group behind the attack, stating that the network operates from Afghanistan under the patronage of the Afghan Taliban regime.

An Army Quick Reaction Force from Bannu Cantt immediately moved to the site and conducted rescue and evacuation operations despite facing multiple roadblocks allegedly placed by militants between nearby police posts before the attack.

Officials highlighted that terrorism in the region continues to benefit from local facilitation, disinformation campaigns, and political confusion surrounding the security situation.

Concerns were also raised regarding attempts to create divisions between the Army and KP Police through political narratives and pressure groups within certain circles.

Security officials emphasized that KP Police and the Pakistan Army have fought terrorism side by side for over two decades and rendered immense sacrifices in restoring peace to the region.

Authorities stressed the need for stronger police infrastructure, better surveillance systems, improved protection for police posts, and depoliticized command structures to strengthen counterterrorism efforts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Officials further stated that intelligence operations are ongoing to track down the masterminds of the Fateh Khel attack and reaffirmed that those responsible will face a decisive response.
