ISLAMABAD : Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Sher Afzal Marwat has clarified that the party’s recently filed contempt of court petition deliberately excluded Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, stating that PTI does not hold him responsible for the alleged violation of Supreme Court orders.
Speaking on a private television channel program, Marwat explained that the contempt petition was filed against the government over its failure to shift the party’s founding chairman to Shifa International Hospital for a medical examination—a directive that was explicitly issued by the Supreme Court. The PTI leadership views the administration’s non-compliance as a clear affront to the judiciary, prompting the legal challenge.
However, Marwat made it clear that Mohsin Naqvi’s name was intentionally left out of the petition, a decision that has reportedly caused significant anxiety and annoyance among several federal cabinet ministers who are already at odds with the interior minister.
“The reason for omitting Naqvi is his relatively flexible stance on facilitating prison meetings between PTI leadership and the founding chairman,” Marwat stated. “We do not consider him responsible on this specific issue.”
The PTI leader’s remarks suggest that the party views Naqvi’s approach as comparatively accommodating, a factor that has irked other members of the government who have taken a harder line. According to Marwat, this distinction has created unease within the cabinet, as some ministers view Naqvi’s exclusion from the petition as a sign of preferential treatment.
Marwat further maintained that the contempt plea was not targeted at any individual minister but was instead aimed at holding the entire government accountable for defying judicial orders. He reiterated that PTI remains committed to pursuing legal remedies to ensure the founding chairman receives adequate medical care in line with the Supreme Court’s directives.
