WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump announced on Monday the launch of “Project Freedom” to evacuate ships stranded in the Strait of Hormuz.
He said several countries not involved in the Middle East conflict requested U.S. assistance to move their vessels out of the restricted waterway.
He described those countries as neutral parties caught in the crisis.
Trump said assurances had been given that their ships would be escorted safely through limited maritime routes to allow trade to continue.
He directed U.S. officials to ensure the safe passage of vessels and their crews.
He added that ships would not return until navigation in the area becomes secure.
He said U.S. representatives are holding positive talks with Iran and expressed hope for constructive outcomes.
He said the operation aims to provide relief to individuals, companies and countries affected by the crisis despite having no role in it.
He described the initiative as a humanitarian effort, particularly for countries in the Middle East.
He warned that any interference with the operation would trigger a strong response.
He also said shortages of food and essential supplies have been reported on several vessels, raising concerns for crew safety.
He described the move as a goodwill gesture amid ongoing tensions in the region.
