ISLAMABAD: Citizens of Karachi are bearing the brunt of soaring food inflation, purchasing the most expensive flour in the country at a staggering Rs 2,900 for a 20-kilogram bag, according to official data released by the Bureau of Statistics.
The price disparity across Pakistan’s major cities is stark, with the federal capital Islamabad, Quetta, and Khuzdar following closely behind at Rs 2,800 per 20 kg bag. Peshawar residents are paying Rs 2,750, while Rawalpindi’s flour bag costs Rs 2,747 and Hyderabad Rs 2,740. In Bannu, the price has climbed to Rs 2,700.
Sindh’s interior cities show relatively lower rates, with Sukkur at Rs 2,560 and Larkana at Rs 2,500. Punjab’s major urban centers fare better—Multan is selling at Rs 2,420, while Gujranwala and Bahawalpur both hover around Rs 2,400. Sialkot consumers pay Rs 2,333, and Faisalabad Rs 2,300.
The cheapest flour is available in Lahore at Rs 2,250 per 20 kg bag, with Sargodha just marginally lower at Rs 2,240.
The widening price gap highlights growing regional inequalities in essential commodity costs, putting immense pressure on household budgets across the country as inflation continues to erode purchasing power
