WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump dismissed growing scrutiny over Pakistan’s role as a potential mediator between the United States and Iran on Tuesday, praising the country’s leadership just before departing for China.
Speaking briefly to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump was asked whether recent rumors in US media had led him to reconsider Pakistan as a neutral intermediary.
“No, they are great,” Trump replied. “The field marshal and the PM of Pakistan have been absolutely great.”
The President’s comments come amid swirling speculation in American media following unconfirmed reports that Iranian military aircraft have been spotted at Pakistani airports. The reports have sparked debate in Washington and raised questions about Pakistan’s neutrality in the event of a US-Iran conflict.
Critics argue that allowing Iranian military assets on Pakistani soil could compromise Pakistan’s position as an honest broker. However, Trump’s remarks appeared to brush aside those concerns, reaffirming his administration’s confidence in Islamabad’s leadership.
