ISLAMABAD: The world’s richest person, Elon Musk, has openly praised a Pakistani judicial decision, welcoming the Lahore High Court’s ruling to uphold the death penalty for convicts in the motorway gang rape case.
The Lahore High Court on Wednesday dismissed appeals filed by the convicts, Abid Malhi and Shafqat Bagga, challenging their death sentence in the high-profile motorway gang rape case.
Reacting to the development, Elon Musk said the West should also take courageous decisions like Pakistan. He made the remarks in response to a social media message from British MP Rupert James Graham.
Rupert James Graham, who leads the political party Restore Britain — which works to restore public trust in governance systems and promote accountability at the local level — called the judiciary’s decision “good news coming from Pakistan.”
It may be recalled that on March 20, 2021, an Anti-Terrorism Court had awarded the death penalty to both convicts for the crime of rape. The convicts subsequently challenged the decision in the Lahore High Court on March 25, 2021. The court has now dismissed their appeals, upholding the capital punishment.
