PESHAWAR: A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including the provincial capital Peshawar, on Monday around noon, officials said.
Tremors were also felt in Swat, Buner, Shangla, Nowshera, Chitral, and Mardan. Shaking was also reported in Rawalpindi.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the earthquake measured 5.7 on the Richter scale. The epicenter was located near the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border at a depth of around 170 kilometres, it said.
The tremors lasted for a few seconds, according to initial reports.
Residents reported strong shaking in homes and offices. Some people rushed outdoors as a precaution.
Local authorities said no immediate reports of casualties or structural damage had been received.
