DELHI: Delhi Capitals and Indian cricketer Abhishek Porel has been arrested following a complaint filed by a female medical student, facing charges of alleged sexual assault, criminal intimidation, and other serious offenses.
According to Indian media, police confirmed the arrest of Abhishek Porel, stating that the case was registered in June of this year based on a complaint by the medical student.
The complainant told police that she had been in a relationship with the cricketer for the past three years.
The woman stated that Abhishek Porel had promised to marry her, and based on this assurance, a physical relationship was established between them. However, the cricketer later refused to marry her and began distancing himself.
In her complaint, the woman also alleged that Abhishek Porel subjected her to violence and issued criminal intimidation. Following the complaint, police initiated an investigation into the matter.
According to Indian media, the Calcutta High Court subsequently directed the police to arrest Abhishek Porel in the case, following which law enforcement took the cricketer into custody.
On the other hand, reports indicate that Abhishek Porel has previously denied the allegations leveled against him. The accusations made by the complainant have not yet been legally verified, and ongoing police investigations continue.
The 27-year-old left-handed batsman, Abhishek Porel, has been representing the Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League since 2023. In the previous season, he scored 108 runs in four innings for the team.
The true nature and legal status of the charges will become clearer only after the completion of the police investigation and judicial proceedings.
