MANAMA:  The Attorney General of Bahrain announced on Wednesday that the country has sentenced three Bahraini nationals and two Afghan citizens to life imprisonment on espionage charges.

According to an official statement, the convicted individuals cooperated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to carry out activities described as “hostile foreign entities against the Kingdom of Bahrain and to harm its interests.”

No further details were provided regarding the identities of the two Afghan nationals who were tried alongside the Bahraini defendants. The statement did not disclose when the alleged espionage activities took place or what specific information was involved.

The Taliban administration in Afghanistan has not yet commented on the matter.

According to the report, Gulf countries were repeatedly targeted by Tehran during the recent US and Israeli war against Iran. However, none of these countries entered into direct conflict with Iran during that period.

Despite avoiding direct military confrontation, Gulf states have arrested and prosecuted dozens of individuals on charges of cooperation with or espionage for Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. Bahrain’s latest sentencing is the most recent in a series of such legal actions across the region.

Further developments may follow as more details emerge or if the Taliban issues an official response.
