ISLAMABAD: Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday called for stronger implementation of the United Nations Charter, Security Council resolutions and international law during a meeting with Rebeca Grynspan, a candidate for the post of U.N. secretary-general.
Grynspan met Sharif at the Prime Minister’s House in Islamabad as part of her outreach ahead of the selection process for the U.N.’s top post.
Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism and said the country remained fully committed to the purposes and principles of the U.N. Charter.
He said effective and impartial implementation of U.N. Security Council resolutions, respect for international law and adherence to global agreements were essential to promoting international peace, security and prosperity.
The prime minister said balanced progress across the U.N.’s three core pillars—peace and security, development, and human rights—was critical to strengthening the organization’s role.
He also stressed the need to accelerate implementation of the global development agenda and enhance international cooperation to help developing countries address their economic and development challenges.

Grynspan praised Pakistan’s longstanding contributions to the United Nations and its constructive role within the multilateral body.
She also commended Pakistan’s recent efforts to promote regional peace and described the country’s contributions to international peace and stability as valuable, according to a statement released after the meeting.
