KARACHI: Pakistan has launched indigenous dredging operations at Port Qasim under the newly established National Dredging and Marine Services (NDMS) company, in a move aimed at strengthening maritime self-reliance and reducing dependence on foreign contractors.
Dredging is considered essential for efficient port operations as it maintains navigational depth and allows ports to accommodate larger vessels. Pakistan had not carried out capital dredging at its ports since 1980 due to the absence of indigenous dredging capability, officials said.
As a result, authorities relied on foreign companies for dredging work, leading to a significant outflow of foreign exchange.
The government recently established NDMS as a joint initiative involving the National Logistics Corporation, Karachi Port Trust, Port Qasim Authority and Gwadar Port Authority. Officials said the partnership reflects a coordinated national effort to improve maritime infrastructure and institutional capacity.
The launch ceremony took place at Port Qasim. Chairman Port Qasim Authority Syed Moazzam Ilyas attended the event as chief guest. Senior officials from port terminals and Pakistan Customs also participated.
Officials described the induction of indigenous dredging capability as a major milestone for Pakistan’s blue economy. They said the initiative would help save foreign exchange and strengthen self-reliance in critical maritime operations.
Authorities expect the expanded navigational capacity to support larger vessels and boost the country’s import and export trade in the coming years.

NDMS said it would use modern and internationally compliant dredging solutions to ensure uninterrupted operations and optimal navigational depth at Port Qasim. The company also plans to expand dredging services to international ports in the future.
