KABUL: Tensions at the Iran-Afghanistan border escalated as Iranian border forces opened fire on a group of Afghan nationals attempting to cross illegally from Farah province. According to Afghan media reports, a group of 35 Afghans tried to bypass a border checkpoint, prompting Iranian forces to respond with live fire.
Ten Afghan citizens were killed in the incident. The spokesperson for the Afghan Taliban in Farah province, Mohammad Naseem Badri, confirmed the fatalities.
The incident highlights growing concerns over the illegal movement of Afghan nationals and increasing border security tensions between the two countries.
Meanwhile, the Iranian Human Rights Organisation has reported that at least nine prisoners including two Afghan nationals have recently been executed across several prisons in the country.
A section of Hengaw’s report states: “Nine inmates, including two Afghan citizens, have recently been executed in several Iranian prisons. All had previously been sentenced to death by the judiciary of the Islamic Republic of Iran on charges of ‘premeditated murder,’ ‘drug-related crimes,’ and ‘sexual assault.’”

“The secret execution of citizens without the knowledge and involvement of the Afghan government violates human rights principles and the international obligations of the host country. The Iranian government is expected to act transparently in such cases and avoid unilateral decisions,” said Nazra Nazari, a migrant rights activist.
