ISLAMABAD: Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has endorsed the recent remarks made by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi regarding systemic inconsistencies and weaknesses in the country’s governance structure, while emphasizing that such critical discussions should take place within constitutional forums.
Speaking to media on Sunday, Asif stated that he personally “more or less agrees” with Naqvi’s observations, which he described as deserving serious consideration. The Interior Minister had earlier highlighted various flaws within the national system, sparking debate across political circles.
“The views expressed by Mohsin Naqvi on the inconsistencies and weaknesses of the country’s system should be seriously considered,” Asif said, adding that if the objective is to strengthen institutions and bring about fundamental reforms, the appropriate forum for such deliberation is Parliament.
The Defense Minister noted that Naqvi himself is a member of Parliament, making it all the more appropriate for these matters to be discussed in the legislative assembly and the federal cabinet. “This issue can also be discussed in the Federal Cabinet, which will strengthen the institutions and systems, and the desired change will come through a constitutional and democratic process,” he added.
Asif expressed hope that Naqvi, who occasionally attends parliamentary and cabinet meetings, would contribute to effective discussions on such important issues in those venues. The remarks come amid growing discourse on institutional reforms and governance challenges facing the country.
Political analysts view the Defense Minister’s public endorsement as a significant show of unity within the ruling coalition on the need for systemic reforms, while his emphasis on parliamentary process underscores the government’s commitment to constitutional pathways for change.
