No 28th Amendment under discussion: Federal Minister Tariq Fazal Choudary

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister Tariq Fazal Chaudhry has said that the government is not currently considering any proposal regarding the 28th Constitutional Amendment.

He clarified that only if consensus is reached on the amendments that could not be included in the 27th Amendment, the government may move forward with a new amendment.

In this regard, the minister stated that no discussion is taking place on revisiting the 18th Constitutional Amendment, and any such claims are baseless. He said that certain changes were initially planned for inclusion in the 27th Amendment, but they could not be finalized at the time.

Furthermore, Chaudhry added that the government will only introduce the 28th Amendment if all stakeholders agree.

“If consensus is achieved, the 28th Amendment will come. As of now, there has been no discussion on this matter. Any claim suggesting otherwise is incorrect,” he said, focusing on the government’s position in clear terms.

Moreover, the minister dismissed reports suggesting that the government intends to roll back the 18th Amendment, calling them misleading propaganda.

He said that the government has no intention of taking any step without consulting its coalition partners. “We do not act without taking our allies into confidence,” he added.

In this sense, Tariq Fazal Chaudhry also stressed the importance of cooperation between the government, the opposition, and allied parties. He said the government aims to maintain a constructive environment and reduce political tensions.

In addition, commenting on the role of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), he said the government encourages PTI to play its role in Parliament and present its proposals.

The minister also mentioned that the founder of PTI avoided engaging with opposition leaders, whereas the present government does not treat political disagreements as personal hostility. He noted that former KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur continued protests even during his tenure.
