CAPE TOWN: The International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s ODI World Cup 2027 is set to feature an expanded 14-team format, marking a significant milestone for international cricket.
With co-hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe securing automatic berths, the race for the remaining direct qualification spots through the ICC ODI rankings has intensified cricket enthusiasm globally.
The upcoming 2027 edition of the ODI World Cup will adopt a broader 14-team structure, a notable expansion compared to the previous two tournament cycles.
Alongside automatic hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe, the top eight teams in the official ICC ODI rankings as of September 30 secure direct qualification.
Afghanistan has substantially solidified its position inside the top eight following a thrilling victory against Ireland in Belfast. Consequently, defending champions Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, England, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan join the host nations to complete the ten direct entrants.
This expanded tournament format aims to foster broader international competition and global engagement, setting the stage for an unprecedented showcase of ODI cricket talent across the host nations.
