ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s NDMA on Tuesday issued a high-risk weather alert for the country’s northern regions, warning of possible glacial lake outburst floods and flash flooding over the next several days.
The authority said the risk would remain in place from today until May 16 due to expected heavy rainfall and rapidly melting glaciers.
According to the NDMA, overflowing streams and flash floods could hit parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir as a result of heavy rain and potential glacial lake bursts.
The agency warned that local residents and tourists could face serious danger in vulnerable areas.
Authorities advised people to avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather conditions and stay away from electricity poles and weak structures.
Tourists were also instructed not to camp near rivers, streams or mountain slopes due to the risk of sudden flooding and landslides.
