LAHORE: Former Pakistani cricketer Urooj Mumtaz has highlighted Pakistan fast bowling as she attributed its traditional decline to batting-friendly domestic pitches, which have limited fast bowlers’ opportunities to hone their skills.
Speaking in response to a query by Michael Atherton, Mumtaz stated that pitch preparation in Pakistan remains a major issue, citing recent series such as England’s tour of Pakistan as clear examples.
She noted that while fast bowling has historically been Pakistan’s greatest strength, its impact has faded in recent years.
Mumtaz claimed that during Babar Azam’s captaincy era, the demand for flat, batting-friendly pitches grew, and grass was stripped from first-class cricket pitches to favor batters, depriving fast bowlers of tough developmental conditions.
Referencing individual players, she mentioned that Shaheen Shah Afridi, once considered among the world’s most talented young fast bowlers, saw his performance impacted by injuries, alongside expressing concerns over Naseem Shah’s current trajectory and Haris Rauf’s drop in pace.
She emphasized that these pitch problems extend beyond international fixtures, urging domestic and first-class structures to cultivate challenging tracks that foster genuine Pakistan fast bowling excellence.
Challenging Conditions for Faster Bowlers in Pakistani Tracks:
Creating truly demanding and sporting surfaces is vital for the long-term resurgence of Pakistan fast bowling talent.
Historically, legendary pacers thrived because local tracks offered variable bounce, seam movement, and deterioration over five days, preparing them for grueling overseas conditions.
When domestic curators produce docile, lifeless pitches solely to boost batting statistics, it creates a false sense of security for batters and leaves seamers underprepared for international rigors.

Reforming pitch preparation standards across domestic tournaments to ensure pace and bounce will not only revitalize the traditional identity of Pakistan fast bowling but also build resilient athletes capable of dominating global cricket once again.
