School Roof Collapse: 12 Girls Injured in Sukkur

SUKKER: Twelve young girls were injured when the ceiling plaster of a government school collapsed in Sukkur.

The incident occurred at the Government Girls Primary School in Shah Khalid Colony, Sukkur, where the roof plaster gave way while classes were actively in session.

Following the accident, rescue teams rushed to the site. Children with minor injuries received immediate first aid, while those more seriously hurt were swiftly transferred to Civil Hospital for urgent medical treatment.

A History of Tragic Infrastructure Failures in Pakistan’s Educational Institutions

The alarming incident at the Government Girls Primary School in Sukkur highlights a deeply concerning pattern of structural neglect and decaying infrastructure across public educational institutions in Pakistan.

Over the past several years, numerous hazardous incidents have been reported, ranging from sudden roof collapses and crumbling classroom walls to catastrophic structural failures during active school hours.

These recurring tragedies routinely place the lives of young students and teachers at extreme risk, shedding light on systemic governance flaws within the public education sector.

A primary driver behind these deadly incidents is chronic underfunding and widespread administrative apathy toward building maintenance.

In many provinces, thousands of public schools operate out of decades-old buildings that have received little to no structural reinforcement, waterproofing, or routine repairs.

Monsoon rains, extreme weather fluctuations, and sub-standard construction materials further accelerate the degradation of walls and ceilings.

Education departments often operate on reactive rather than preventive frameworks, meaning major structural audits and safety overhauls are rarely conducted until a disaster actually strikes.

Furthermore, corruption and embezzlement in school construction and repair budgets severely compromise building integrity.

Allocated funds frequently vanish through opaque procurement processes, leaving institutions with substandard materials that cannot withstand basic environmental wear and tear.

Civil society organizations, parents, and teacher unions have repeatedly called for comprehensive, nationwide safety audits of all government-run schools.

Experts emphasize that protecting students requires mandatory safety standards, transparent fund disbursement, and immediate evacuation or retrofitting of dilapidated structures.
