ISLAMABAD: The Taliban Regime Faces Growing Afghan Resistance as opposition groups have reported a series of armed and political activities across five Afghan provinces, including Kapisa, Helmand, Zabul, Badakhshan and Herat.
The reported developments indicate that anti-Taliban groups are seeking to maintain pressure on the authorities across geographically distant areas of Afghanistan. The groups have claimed attacks targeting Taliban checkpoints and personnel, while also conducting political and religious messaging campaigns in urban areas.
Taliban Regime Faces Growing Afghan Resistance in Multiple Provinces
On September 9, the Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF) claimed that its fighters attacked a Taliban checkpoint located at a former Afghan National Army base in Tagab district of Kapisa province.
According to the group, three Taliban personnel were killed and two others were wounded in the attack. The AFF said the incident occurred at around 8pm and claimed that none of its fighters was injured.
The reported attack followed another incident in neighbouring Kunar province. The AFF claimed that one Taliban member was killed and two others were wounded during an attack at a former Afghan military facility.
Resistance Activity Reported in Helmand and Zabul
The Afghanistan United Front (AUF) also reported operations in southern Afghanistan.
On September 11, the group claimed that two Taliban personnel were killed during an operation in Lashkargah, the capital of Helmand province.
The AUF separately reported an attack in Zabul province targeting a Taliban member associated with the 3rd Brigade of Corps 205. The group claimed that the individual was killed during the operation.
The claims could not be independently verified.
Badakhshan Remains a Key Area of Opposition
In Badakhshan province, the National Resistance Front (NRF) claimed responsibility for an attack on a Taliban checkpoint in the Danishabad area of Yaftal-e Payan district on September 10.
The group said the fighting began at around 11pm and lasted approximately 40 minutes, with three Taliban personnel allegedly wounded.
Badakhshan has witnessed several reports of anti-Taliban activity in recent months. In July, a newly formed resistance group reportedly took temporary control of the Yaftal district centre before withdrawing.
Political Messaging Expands in Herat
Resistance activity has also extended beyond armed operations.
On September 11, the AUF said it distributed leadership messages and religious scholars’ fatwas at 28 locations across Herat city. The reported locations included Lala-i Market, Qala-i Ikhtiyaruddin, Mustafa Chowk, Bagh-i Millat and Chahar Bagh.
The development indicates that opposition groups are attempting to challenge Taliban authority through political and religious messaging alongside reported armed activity.
Opposition Challenges Taliban’s Claim of Stability
The reported incidents across several provinces highlight the continuing presence of opposition groups in Afghanistan despite the Taliban’s control over the country’s state institutions.
The geographical spread of the reported activities, from northern Badakhshan and Kapisa to southern Helmand and Zabul, demonstrates the varied nature of opposition to Taliban rule.
