Business Markets, Shops to Shut by 9 pm Across Balochistan

QUETTA: The Balochistan government has introduced new operating hours for businesses across the province, including the provincial capital Quetta, in an effort to regulate commercial activity, improve security, reduce traffic congestion and conserve energy.

Under a notification issued by the provincial administration, shops, markets and shopping malls must close by 9 p.m. Restaurants, cafes and food outlets may remain open until 11 p.m.

Wedding halls, marquees and other event venues can operate until 10 p.m.

The government exempted takeaway and home delivery services from the new restrictions.

Authorities said the measure aims to improve public convenience, strengthen law and order, ease traffic pressure and reduce energy consumption.

Several sectors will remain exempt to ensure uninterrupted access to essential services. These include pharmacies, hospitals, clinics and medical laboratories. Bakeries, traditional bread ovens, milk and dairy shops will also remain exempt. Fuel stations, CNG stations and electric vehicle charging facilities are not affected by the restrictions.

The exemptions also cover gyms, sports complexes, information technology companies and call centers.

Officials have circulated the notification to deputy commissioners and relevant departments across the province. Authorities warned that they would take strict action against businesses that violate the new rules.

The decision has drawn mixed reactions from traders and residents.

A leader of the Quetta Chamber of Commerce expressed concern that the early closure time could hurt small businesses, particularly during the summer months when many people prefer to shop later in the evening.

Some traders, however, welcomed the move. They said it would allow employees to return home earlier and could help address security concerns.

Residents offered differing views. Some supported the decision to allow restaurants to remain open until 11 p.m. Others questioned whether the 9 p.m. closure of shopping malls would be convenient for families.

Additional Chief Secretary for Home Affairs said the government introduced the policy to improve law and order and better organize nighttime economic activity across the province.
