QUETTA: Activists of Sunni Tehreek Jaffarabad staged a protest outside the Quetta Press Club on Friday against the worsening water crisis in Jaffarabad, alleging corruption and inefficiency in the Irrigation Department.
Led by provincial spokesperson Mir Nazir Ahmed, demonstrators carried placards demanding immediate action to address the acute water shortage. Local leaders including Mir Muhammad Jatak, Muhammad Usman Jatak and Nasrullah Jatak said the crisis had reached an alarming level, with the Pat Feeder Canal water shortage severely affecting agriculture.
Speakers criticized the provincial irrigation minister and the local MPA for failing to resolve the issue, alleging widespread corruption in the Irrigation Department. They claimed millions had been lost to corruption and that canal cleaning work remained incomplete despite billions in allocated funds. Protesters demanded a judicial inquiry into the matter.
Farmers are suffering immense losses as crops have dried up, threatening livelihoods and livestock. The demonstrators urged authorities to ensure water supply to tail-end areas and take practical measures to avert further damage. The protest concluded peacefully with demands for justice.
