ISLAMABAD: Pakistan is observing Defence and Martyrs Day on September 6 with ceremonies and special programmes across the country to honour soldiers who sacrificed their lives for the nation and recognise the courage of those who defended the country.
The annual observance pays tribute to the martyrs and Ghazis of Pakistan’s armed forces while reaffirming the country’s commitment to protecting its sovereignty, territorial integrity and national interests.
September 6 Holds Historical Significance
Defence and Martyrs Day commemorates the events of September 6, 1965, when Indian forces crossed the international border and launched an attack on Pakistan.
Pakistan’s armed forces, supported by civilians across the country, resisted the offensive and defended the country against the attack. The day has since remained an important occasion for remembering the sacrifices made during the 1965 war.
Gun Salutes Mark Defence and Martyrs Day
The commemorations will begin with a 31-gun salute in Islamabad, while 21-gun salutes will be held in the provincial capitals.
The ceremonial gun salutes are part of nationwide events marking the day and paying tribute to those who served in defence of the country.

Special Prayers to Be Offered
Mosques across Pakistan will hold special prayers after Fajr for the country’s peace, security, progress and prosperity.
Prayers will also be offered for the freedom and well-being of the people of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.
Special Broadcasts to Highlight Sacrifices
National television and radio broadcasters are scheduled to air special programmes throughout the day.
The programmes will focus on the sacrifices, courage and bravery of Pakistan’s martyrs and Ghazis and highlight their role in defending the country.
Defence and Martyrs Day serves as an annual reminder of the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces and the importance of national unity in safeguarding Pakistan’s security and sovereignty.
