Chashma-1 Nuclear Power Plant Sets New Record

Chashma-1 Nuclear Power Plant Sets New Record

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Chashma-1 Nuclear Power Plant has set a new and historic milestone by maintaining its exceptional performance with 427 consecutive days of safe, continuous, and uninterrupted operation, delivering electricity at a rate that is second in affordability only to hydropower.

According to an official announcement by the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), this remarkable achievement has earned the Chashma-1 Nuclear Power Plant a perfect score of 100 on the global index for two consecutive quarters.

The cost of electricity generation from this plant stands at just PKR 6.87 per unit, making it one of the cheapest power sources in the country following hydro generation.

Currently, the six operational nuclear power plants under the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission have a combined generation capacity of 3,530 megawatts, serving as a vital backbone for the national grid.

The record-breaking run at Chashma-1 is a testament to the high technical expertise, dedication, and teamwork of Pakistani engineers, scientists, and staff.

Experts note that the consistent performance of these nuclear power plants further highlights PAEC’s indispensable role in securing Pakistan’s long-term energy future.

Note: An Overview of Nuclear Power Plants in Pakistan and Their Role in the Energy Sector

The inception and advancement of nuclear energy in Pakistan mark a brilliant chapter in the nation’s energy history.

Under the supervision of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), several advanced nuclear power facilities operate across the country, including the Chashma series (Chashma 1 to 4) and the Karachi Nuclear Power Plants (K-2 and K-3).

Together, these plants boast a total generation capacity of 3,530 megawatts, providing a stable, secure, and environmentally friendly contribution to Pakistan’s energy mix.

Historically, Pakistan has grappled with severe energy crises, prolonged load shedding, and heavy reliance on expensive imported furnace oil, which severely burdened the national economy.

In such challenging times, nuclear energy emerged as a reliable alternative. Unlike thermal and imported LNG sources, electricity generated from nuclear power plants is not only cost-effective (such as Chashma-1’s generation cost of PKR 6.87 per unit) but also ensures continuous, round-the-clock baseload supply without interruptions.

A major advantage of nuclear power plants is their critical role in supplying steady baseload power, which protects the national grid from voltage fluctuations. Furthermore, these plants operate with zero carbon emissions, a crucial factor for countries like Pakistan that are vulnerable to the impacts of climate change.

Recent milestones—such as Chashma-1 operating uninterrupted for 427 days and scoring 100 on international indices—prove that Pakistani scientific personnel and engineers adhere strictly to global safety and operational standards.
