WASHINGTON: President Donald Trump has issued a firm ultimatum to Iran, stating he will wait only “a few days” for a response from Tehran. He warned that no economic relief will be provided to the country until a deal is finalized.
Speaking to the media, Trump described the Iranian leaders currently in communication with the U.S. as “reasonable people,” but reiterated his claim that Iran is desperate for an agreement due to worsening domestic conditions. “The condition of the people in Iran is very bad,” Trump said, citing “severe public grief and anger” caused by a struggling economy.
The President also issued a direct threat, stating that if a deal is not reached, the U.S. “may attack again.” He noted that it has been only three months since the last conflict with Iran, adding, “There is still plenty of time for a ceasefire.” Trump also pledged to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but stressed, “I am in no hurry.”
Trump further claimed that Iran is facing its “worst defeat” and has been “badly destroyed,” promising that “more things” will be seen in the coming days.
On other foreign policy matters, Trump described a phone call with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as “a good conversation.” He also commented on Cuba, saying the situation there is “very bad” and that the U.S. needs to help the Cuban people.
Meanwhile, Tehran has confirmed that new proposals have been received from Washington. Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmail Baghai stated that Iran is reviewing the American proposals. Baghai also revealed that Pakistani Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi is currently in Iran to facilitate message exchanges between the two countries, which he said are ongoing based on Iran’s “14 points.”
