ISLAMABAD : The National Database Registration Authority (NADRA) has launched a new national identity card featuring a locally developed QR code, replacing the imported microchip in a major step toward self-reliance and digital innovation.
According to an official announcement, the new identity card has been manufactured entirely in Pakistan using polycarbonate material, with a secure QR code embedded to store critical identification data. The move eliminates dependence on imported microchips and enhances the card’s durability and security.
One of the key features of the new card is its universal accessibility. Citizens can verify their identity using any common smartphone by scanning the QR code through the Pak ID mobile app, making verification quick, contactless, and hassle-free.
The QR code will contain the cardholder’s relevant identity information and photograph, significantly reducing errors in manual data entry of names, addresses, and other details. This is expected to streamline processes across various sectors.
NADRA has announced that QR code verification software will be provided to telecom companies, banks, hospitals, railways, police, and other government agencies to facilitate seamless identity authentication.
The new identity card also includes special markings to indicate family number, disability status, senior citizenship, and organ donor status, allowing for better identification of vulnerable and special groups.
The initiative has been hailed as a technological milestone for Pakistan’s digital infrastructure, enhancing both security and convenience for citizens while promoting indigenous manufacturing.
