Macron Welcomes U.S.-Iran Deal, Urges Immediate Reopening of Hormuz

PARIS : French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday welcomed the newly announced peace agreement between the United States and Iran, urging all parties to reopen the Strait of Hormuz immediately and without conditions.

In a statement, Macron said France will continue to support the Lebanese government in its efforts to consolidate statehood and establish control over Hezbollah. He emphasized that the U.S.-Iran deal presents a critical opportunity to restore maritime security in the Gulf.

“This agreement provides an opportunity to reopen the Strait of Hormuz immediately and unconditionally,” Macron said. He added that international missions established with the United Kingdom are also ready to assist. “We have the resources, and we are ready to deploy them.”

The French president stressed that restoring maritime traffic through the strategic waterway — without any restrictions or tolls — is essential for both regional stability and the global economy. “The full restoration of the waterway is indispensable not only for the region but also for global trade,” he said.

The Strait of Hormuz, a vital chokepoint through which approximately 20% of the world’s oil passes, had been disrupted amid hostilities between Washington and Tehran. The U.S. had previously imposed a naval blockade on Iran, a measure that is now set to be lifted under the terms of the agreement.

Macron’s call for an unconditional reopening aligns with his broader push for de-escalation and economic stability. France has long been involved in diplomatic efforts in the Middle East, particularly in Lebanon, where Paris has sought to curb Hezbollah’s influence and strengthen state institutions.

No immediate response from Iran or the United States was available regarding Macron’s proposal for the Strait’s reopening timeline.
