Lilly Wachowski, Lilly Wachowski Matrix 5 co-creator Lilly Wachowski has said she is not interested in returning to the iconic franchise, even as Warner Bros. moves forward with plans for a fifth Matrix film.
More than two decades after the release of the original The Matrix, Wachowski said she has little interest in continuing to work within the franchise’s fictional world. Her comments come as filmmaker Drew Goddard develops the upcoming Matrix 5 for Warner Bros.
Lilly Wachowski Rules Out Directing Matrix 5
Speaking with Kim Masters on KCRW’s The Business, Wachowski addressed speculation surrounding her possible involvement in the next Matrix movie.
She acknowledged that Warner Bros. continues to show interest in producing additional Matrix content but indicated that she personally feels ready to move on from the franchise.
Wachowski said she no longer wants to work within the creative world of The Matrix, effectively distancing herself from suggestions that she could direct the fifth installment.
Her comments suggest that fans should not expect her to take over the director’s chair for Matrix 5.
Wachowski Sisters Could Still Have a Role
Although Lilly Wachowski Matrix 5 Wachowski does not appear interested in directly returning to the franchise, she suggested that she and her sister Lana Wachowski could potentially have some involvement in the new project.
According to Lilly Wachowski Matrix 5 Drew Goddard does not want to proceed without receiving approval from the original creators.
This leaves open the possibility that the Wachowski sisters could review or provide their blessing to Goddard’s vision for the fifth movie.
However, Lilly indicated that their involvement remains uncertain and that no final decision has been made regarding how much they may contribute.
Drew Goddard Set to Develop Matrix 5
Drew Goddard is attached to write and direct the fifth Matrix film for Warner Bros. He is also expected to produce the project alongside Sarah Esberg through their production banner, Goddard Textiles.
Lana Wachowski remains involved as an executive producer.
Goddard is known for his work as the writer of The Martian and the director of The Cabin in the Woods. He has previously expressed how seriously he takes the responsibility of expanding the Matrix universe.
The filmmaker has emphasised the importance of respecting both the franchise’s audience and its original creators as he works on the new installment.
Matrix Franchise’s Long History
Lilly Wachowski Matrix 5 and Lana Wachowski wrote and directed the original Matrix trilogy, beginning with The Matrix in 1999.
The film became a major science-fiction success and was followed by The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions in 2003.
The sisters subsequently took different paths with the franchise. Lana Wachowski directed The Matrix Resurrections in 2021 without Lilly as co-director.
The upcoming fifth film therefore represents another new chapter for the franchise, with Goddard taking the creative lead.
Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss Return Still Unconfirmed
Details about the cast of Matrix 5 remain unclear.
There has been no confirmation regarding whether Keanu Reeves, who played Neo, or Carrie-Anne Moss, who portrayed Trinity, will return for the upcoming installment.
Their potential involvement remains one of the major unanswered questions surrounding the project.

Lilly Wachowski Matrix 5 Focuses on New Project
While Lilly Wachowski is distancing herself from The Matrix, she is working on another project of her own.
She is currently seeking financing for The Hunted, described as a dystopian political thriller featuring an all-trans cast.
The project represents a different creative direction for Wachowski and could allow her to explore themes and ideas outside the world of The Matrix.
For fans of the original franchise, her latest comments provide a clearer picture of her position: while she may remain open to having some limited involvement in Matrix 5, she does not currently want to return as a director or fully re-enter the franchise.
