KARACHI: Karachi Police, in collaboration with Balochistan Police under a mutual assistance agreement, have recovered 24 vehicles stolen or snatched from Karachi, officials said on Wednesday.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Khalid Mustafa Korai, head of Karachi Police’s Anti-Vehicle Lifting Cell (AVLC), said most vehicles stolen in Karachi are trafficked to Balochistan, where they are often sold at significantly reduced prices.
He said the AVLC had shared a database of vehicles reported stolen or snatched since May 26, 2020, with Balochistan Police, enabling authorities to trace and recover the vehicles.
According to the SSP, the recovered vehicles are collectively valued at more than Rs120 million.
Korai said Balochistan Police requested ownership and registration documents for the recovered vehicles, which were subsequently verified before the vehicles were handed over to Karachi Police.
He did not provide details on the legal process for returning the recovered vehicles to their rightful owners.
The SSP also said the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh has established contact with the Director General of Safe City Punjab to strengthen inter-provincial cooperation in tracing vehicles stolen in Sindh and transported to Punjab.
He said the mutual assistance mechanism between provincial police forces would also improve efforts to track down and arrest suspects operating across provincial boundaries.
