NEW DELHI: Hockey India has rejected Pakistan’s request to move its matches in the Asian Champions Trophy to a neutral venue.
Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) had asked the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) to either move the tournament outside India or shift all of Pakistan’s matches to a neutral venue.
The PHF cited security concerns and the sensitive bilateral situation between India and Pakistan. It said the move was aimed at ensuring a safe and suitable environment for its players and officials.
Hockey India Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh said there would be no change to the tournament venue.
Pakistan would have to play its matches in India if it takes part in the tournament, according to Singh. He also said an alternative team could be invited if Pakistan does not participate.
The Men’s Asian Champions Trophy is scheduled to be held from October 27 to November 5 in India’s Punjab state.
Jalandhar will host the league-stage matches from October 27 to November 2. The semi-finals and final will be played in Mohali on November 4 and 5.
Pakistan and India are scheduled to meet in Jalandhar on November 1.
The venue dispute emerged shortly after Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said Pakistan would participate in the tournament.
The Asian Hockey Federation has yet to issue a separate official response on Pakistan’s request, according to reports available so far.
