SWITZERLAND: The Iranian delegation, led by Iranian MP Baqir Qalibaf, has returned to Iran following the completion of four-party talks in Switzerland, according to Iranian state media. A joint statement is expected to be issued later, though no timeline has been confirmed.
During the talks, the Iranian delegation strongly protested to the US delegation over recent threats made by US President Donald Trump regarding the Strait of Hormuz. Earlier reports indicated that Tehran had refused to participate in a second round of negotiations in Switzerland as a direct response to Trump’s remarks.
On the US side, a diplomat struck a more optimistic tone, stating that good progress had been made in discussions with Iran on keeping the Strait of Hormuz open. The diplomat described the talks as positive, adding that both sides stressed the need to make the ceasefire in Lebanon effective.
According to sources, the first round of negotiations featured detailed discussions between high-level committees from the US and Iran, lasting 45 minutes under Pakistan’s mediation. The agenda included the situation in Lebanon, the status of the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s nuclear stockpiles, and the outlines of a forthcoming 60-day negotiation process.
The broader purpose of the US-Iran talks is to review progress on points agreed upon in the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, advance confidence-building measures, and finalize the framework for future diplomatic action. No date has been set for the next round, and it remains unclear whether Tehran will return to the table.
