KARACHI: In a startling development, police have arrested an official of the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) Balochistan among nine suspects during a major operation against Iranian currency smuggling in Karachi.
According to police officials, the CTD officer’s credentials are currently being verified after he was taken into custody along with eight others. Authorities recovered 23.6 billion Iranian rials — equivalent to crores of rupees — packed in 236 bundles from the suspects’ possession, exposing what officials describe as a large inter-provincial smuggling network.
Two vehicles used in the smuggling attempt were also seized during the operation.
DIG South Asad Raza termed the crackdown a major breakthrough, noting that the involvement of a CTD official has raised serious questions. “Further investigation is underway, and important revelations are expected,” he said.
Police have recommended transferring the case to the FIA’s Commercial Banking Circle, with officials stating that the case will likely be handed over to the federal agency for further legal proceedings.Iranian currency smuggling in K
