WASHINGTON : A crucial week of Iran-US talks has begun, with diplomatic channels gradually becoming clearer even as President Donald Trump’s constant statements on Truth Social continue to complicate the process, officials and analysts say.
While the standoff in the Strait of Hormuz has long posed a major hurdle, Iranian officials have pointed to Trump’s social media posts as an additional obstacle. On several occasions in the past, just when discussions appeared to be moving in a favorable direction, the president’s public comments have reportedly spoiled the atmosphere.
In response, Iranian officials have now made it clear that if diplomacy is to have any chance of success, Trump needs to remain silent.
Despite the ongoing Iran-US conflict unsettling the world, observers note a clear shift in Trump’s approach. While he has not stopped making statements, his tone and style are noticeably softer than before. It remains unclear whether the president is choosing his words more carefully due to advice from aides or has reached that realization on his own.
According to reports, a new negotiation plan has been conveyed to the US through Pakistan, with messages being exchanged between the parties via Islamabad. The US rejected the initial proposal and is currently reviewing a revised plan.
Analysts say the shift in tone suggests that back-channel diplomacy is moving forward despite persistent differences. People familiar with the efforts believe the coming week could prove fruitful for diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing tensions between the two countries
