FIFA World Cup 2026: Mexico Beats South Africa 2-0

MEXICO : Hosts Mexico kicked off the FIFA World Cup 2026 in style, defeating South Africa 2-0 in the opening match played at the historic Estadio Estetica in Mexico City.

 

Mexico took an early stranglehold on the game. In the 9th minute, Yohan Noonan put the home side ahead with a clinical finish, slotting the ball into the net following a clever move. Despite creating several more chances in the first half, Mexico couldn’t extend their lead, and the score remained 1-0 at the break.

 

The hosts came out aggressively after halftime. Early in the second half, Mexican player was brought down by South African defender Seth Holle with a dangerous foul. The referee immediately showed Holle a red card, reducing South Africa to ten men. Mexico earned a free kick from the incident but failed to convert.

 

Mexico doubled their advantage in the 67th minute when Raul headed home from a pass, sending the ball into the South African net. Neither team scored in the remaining time, and the match ended 2-0 in Mexico’s favor.

 

The match was marred by disciplinary chaos. In total, the referee showed red cards to two South African players, while one Mexican player was also sent off during the contest.

 

With the emphatic win, Mexico tops their group early, while South Africa faces an uphill battle to recover from the heavy loss and multiple suspensions.
