LAHORE: Senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader and National Assembly member Mahmood Bashir Virk has died at the age of 89 after a prolonged illness.
According to his family, Virk had been battling cancer for some time and was receiving treatment at a hospital in Lahore.
His funeral prayers were held on Thursday morning, after which he was laid to rest at his ancestral graveyard.
Meanwhile, leaders from the PML-N and other political parties have expressed grief and offered condolences over his death.
Virk remained active in national politics for decades and was regarded as one of the PML-N’s senior-most leaders. He also served as the federal minister for law and justice during his political career.
The veteran politician was elected to the National Assembly five times.
In the 2024 general elections, Virk won the NA-77 Gujranwala-I constituency on a PML-N ticket, securing 109,704 votes.
Independent candidate Rashida Tariq finished second with 91,825 votes, while Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) candidate Imtiaz Safdar Warraich secured 17,059 votes.
His death marks the loss of a veteran political figure who remained associated with parliamentary politics for several decades.
