WASHINGTON, D.C.: A group of 30 House Democrats has called on the Biden administration to end the long-standing policy of official ambiguity regarding Israel’s nuclear program, arguing that the posture undermines non-proliferation efforts and leaves Congress in the dark amid rising tensions with Iran.
In a letter addressed to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the lawmakers wrote that the United States is actively supporting a country engaged in a war against Iran while refusing to officially acknowledge whether that ally possesses nuclear weapons.
“The policy of official ambiguity makes non-proliferation in the Middle East impossible,” the letter stated.
The Democrats emphasized that Congress has a constitutional responsibility to be fully informed about the nuclear balance in the region, the risk of conflict escalation, management planning, and possible contingencies.
The letter comes as Israel is engaged in direct confrontation with Iran and its proxies, raising concerns that a miscalculation could trigger a wider regional war. The signatories argued that without clarity on Israel’s nuclear posture, US lawmakers cannot adequately assess risks or fulfill their oversight role.
The administration has not yet publicly responded to the letter. The US has long maintained a policy of neither confirming nor denying Israel’s nuclear capabilities, a stance meant to avoid forcing Israel into formal declaration while preserving US diplomatic flexibility.
