NEW YORK: An international report has highlighted Asim Munir as a central figure in ongoing diplomatic efforts between the United States and Iran.
Described as one of the most influential figures in Pakistan, the field marshal has developed strong connections with both Washington and Tehran, positioning himself as a key mediator in efforts to ease tensions between the two countries.
According to the report, former US President Donald Trump acknowledged Pakistan’s role in facilitating dialogue, stating that the decision to pause military action against Iran came following requests from Field Marshal Munir and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
Munir has been actively engaged in diplomacy, including hosting US Vice President J. D. Vance in Islamabad and maintaining communication channels with Iranian leadership.
Born in 1968, Munir rose through military ranks, serving in key intelligence roles before becoming Chief of Army Staff in 2022.
He was later promoted to Field Marshal following heightened regional tensions, including conflict with India.
His growing international profile has been further strengthened through direct engagements with US leadership, including meetings at the White House.
The report also noted Pakistan’s broader strategic interests, including maintaining stability along its border with Iran and preserving longstanding diplomatic and cultural ties.
During a recent visit to Tehran, Munir met senior Iranian officials, including Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, emphasizing the need for continued dialogue to achieve regional peace.
