Argentina secured a dramatic 3-1 victory over Switzerland after extra time in the final quarter-final of the FIFA World Cup 2026, booking their place in the semi-finals where they will face England in a highly anticipated clash.
The defending champions made a strong start to the match and opened the scoring in the 10th minute through Alexis Mac Allister, who calmly finished a well-worked attacking move to give Argentina an early lead.
The South American side dominated possession for much of the first half, while Switzerland remained disciplined in defence and searched for opportunities on the counterattack.
Switzerland fought back in the second half and restored parity in the 67th minute when Dan Ndoye found the back of the net with a clinical finish, bringing the score to 1-1.
In this regard, both teams created several chances during the remainder of regulation time, but neither side was able to score the decisive goal, forcing the match into an additional 30 minutes of extra time.
Argentina regained control during extra time and eventually broke the deadlock in the second period when Julián Álvarez scored a crucial goal to restore his team’s advantage.
In this sense, as Switzerland pushed forward in search of another equaliser, Argentina capitalised on the additional space and added a third goal in the closing moments of the match to seal an impressive 3-1 victory and confirm their place in the last four of the tournament.
The match also featured a controversial moment involving Switzerland forward Breel Embolo. The referee initially reviewed an incident after Embolo claimed he had been fouled by an Argentine defender.
The match official concluded that the Swiss player had simulated the incident and issued him a red card, reducing Switzerland to ten men for the remainder of the contest.
Argentina continue their title defence and move one step closer to retaining the FIFA World Cup trophy. They will now face England in the semi-finals in what promises to be one of the tournament’s biggest encounters.
So far, football fans around the world are eagerly awaiting the clash between two of the competition’s strongest teams as both nations aim to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final.
