SYDNEY: Australia’s veteran spinner Nathan Lyon is facing growing competition for his place in the Test side as selectors weigh their options for the upcoming series.
Lyon, Australia’s second-highest Test wicket-taker, has been a regular in the team for more than a decade. However, Australia could rely more heavily on its pace attack against South Africa and New Zealand.
Lyon missed the final two Ashes Tests because of a hamstring injury. He returned to the side for the series against Bangladesh.
In the first Test, Lyon took one wicket for 125 runs. He then claimed three wickets for 25 runs in the second match.
However, Australia’s pace bowlers produced strong performances in the second Test, limiting Lyon’s role in the match.
The 39-year-old has taken 571 wickets in 143 Tests. Despite the competition, Lyon still considers himself an important part of the Australian team.
Meanwhile, the presence of Scott Boland could make Lyon’s position less secure. Selectors could also consider an all-pace attack in conditions that favour fast bowling.
Wicketkeeper Alex Carey said Australia’s ability to adjust its team combination according to different pitches could prove a major advantage.
The selectors now face a key decision over whether to retain Lyon or strengthen the pace attack for the upcoming series.
