ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s military leadership has taken serious notice of an incident at Sarhad University’s Islamabad campus and initiated disciplinary action against the officer involved, according to well-placed sources.
The development follows an aerial firing incident at the university on Monday morning involved in army officer in uniform. The Pakistan Army took the officer into custody and launched an inquiry into his conduct.
According to a military statement, the incident occurred after several students protested over issues related to their department, fees and classes.
During the protest, the head of student affairs went to speak with the students. Some students, however, misbehaved with her, prompting her to call her husband, a military officer, for assistance.
The officer arrived at the campus. Some students allegedly misbehaved with him as well. Footages circulating online shows that he is trying to rescue the woman said to be his wife. During this time, he also fires a gun at air.
The Army later took the officer into custody and began disciplinary proceedings against him.
Meanwhile, the military leadership has stressed that the Army maintains a strict system of discipline and accountability. It also said it takes swift action against violations of law and discipline without discrimination.
The military said it would take further action based on the findings of the inquiry.
