Senate, National Assembly Meet Today: What’s on the Agenda?

ISLAMABAD: The Senate and National Assembly will hold separate sessions at Parliament House in Islamabad today. Lawmakers will discuss legislation and issues of national and international importance.

The Senate session will begin at 4pm, while the National Assembly will meet at 5pm.

The two houses have issued a combined agenda of 111 items.

Before the National Assembly session, the Business Advisory Committee will meet at 4 pm in the Speaker’s Lounge. National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq will chair the meeting.

The committee will finalise the duration of the current session and the business of the house. Government and opposition leaders have been invited to attend.

National Assembly Agenda

The National Assembly has a 42-point agenda.

It includes call-attention notices on water shortages in Islamabad, the installation of water purification plants and delays in allocating land for a national museum at Shakarparian.

The house will also consider several amendment bills. They include legislation related to the Employees’ Old-Age Benefits Institution, natural gas surcharge and the Gas Infrastructure Development Cess.

Standing committees will present reports on several bills. These include the Insurance Bill and the Copyright Amendment Bill.

The house will also consider amendment bills already passed by the Senate. They include changes to the Travel Agencies Act, Pakistan Tourist Guides Act and Motion Pictures Ordinance.

Senate Session Agenda

The Senate has a 69-point agenda.

Its standing committees will present reports on matters involving Lok Virsa, the National Textile University, the Civil Servants Act and Area Study Centres.

The upper house will also consider bills to regulate the use of disposable syringes in Islamabad and amend criminal laws.

Lawmakers will debate several public-interest issues. These include alleged irregularities in the Benazir Income Support Programme, deaths from postpartum bleeding, the trade deficit and Pakistan Railways’ performance.

The Senate will also discuss the National Disaster Management Authority’s preparedness for the monsoon floods.

The agenda also includes resolutions on human rights, tolerance and social justice. One resolution seeks to promote training for imams and prayer leaders in these areas.

Another resolution will pay tribute to Group Captain Asim Tariq for his bravery and sacrifice.
