LONDON: Panic swept through a hospital in St Asaph, Denbighshire (Wales), when a 26-year-old man dressed as the “Grim Reaper” climbed onto the hospital roof and began staring at patients, staff, and visitors.
The incident occurred on June 6, when a man wearing a black robe and a mask was spotted standing on the roof of the main hospital building. According to eyewitnesses, he was also holding a long, sharp object, terrifying those present.
Upon receiving the report, North Wales Police and the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the scene and brought the situation under control after an operation lasting approximately 50 minutes.
Police identified the suspect as Leon Gillespie, a resident of Deganwy. He was arrested for causing unjustified panic within NHS premises, obstructing staff, and refusing to leave the location despite police instructions.
The accused later pleaded guilty in court, prompting the Llandudno Magistrates’ Court to order him to pay a 200-pound fine.
The court also sentenced him to pay 50 pounds in compensation, a 100-pound surcharge, and 100 pounds in court costs.
During court proceedings, it was also revealed that Leon Gillespie confessed to previously stealing cat food and other supplies from a Pets at Home store in Llandudno, as well as food items from another store.
Reacting to the incident, hospital management stated that a strict zero-tolerance policy is enforced against any form of misconduct, panic, or disruption in medical facilities, and such incidents will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
It is worth noting that the “Grim Reaper” is a fictional figure symbolizing death in Western traditions, portrayed as a character that collects human souls.
This is why the sudden appearance of a man in this disguise on the hospital roof caused severe panic among patients and staff.
