BANGKOK: A 24-year-old Thai footballer was killed after being struck by lightning during a football match in southern Thailand.
According to foreign media reports, the terrifying incident occurred at the Santip Stadium in the Sungai Kolok district during a heavy downpour.
A local tournament match under the “Kolok FA Cup” was being played between teams from Thailand and Malaysia.
During the match, 24-year-old Thai player Safwan Awae was severely struck by lightning and rushed to the hospital for emergency medical treatment.
According to rescue officials, Safwan Awae succumbed to his injuries, while 12 other players were injured in the incident and are currently receiving treatment.
A video capturing the exact moment of the lightning strike has also gone viral on social media.
