ISLAMABAD: Senate Chairman Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani on Tuesday condemned India’s Aug. 5, 2019, constitutional changes in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, calling them illegal and unilateral. He urged the international community to address what he described as serious human rights violations in the disputed region.
In a message issued on Kashmir Exploitation Day, Gilani said India was attempting to alter the demographic composition of Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir and undermine the identity of the Kashmiri people.
He said repression, state violence and the use of force could not suppress the Kashmiris’ struggle for the right to self-determination.
Gilani said Pakistan would continue to provide political, diplomatic and moral support to the people of Kashmir at every level.
He said a just settlement of the Kashmir dispute must be based on relevant U.N. Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
Gilani called on the United Nations and the international community to take immediate notice of what he described as human rights violations in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.
He urged international institutions to ensure that India complies with international law and relevant U.N. Security Council resolutions.

Gilani said lasting peace and stability in South Asia depend on a fair and durable resolution of the Kashmir dispute.
