WASHINGTON: Two American service members were killed in action and one remains missing in Jordan following Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks on July 17, marking the first US military fatalities from Iranian fire since March, the US Central Command announced Saturday.
According to a social media post by CENTCOM, the two soldiers were killed while defending alongside partner forces against the Iranian strikes. Four additional American personnel sustained injuries and were medically evacuated to hospitals in Jordan but have since been discharged, while others who suffered minor wounds have returned to duty.
CENTCOM stated that it will withhold the identities of the fallen service members until 24 hours after their next of kin have been notified. The command did not provide further details on the circumstances surrounding the missing soldier or the exact location of the attacks within Jordan.
The fatalities represent a significant escalation in direct confrontation with Iranian forces, as the United States maintains a military presence in Jordan to support regional security operations and defend against hostile actions.
