KARACHI: Pakistani police arrested a man accused of abducting, sexually assaulting and killing a six-year-old boy in Karachi after local residents caught the suspect and handed him over to authorities.
Police said the child, identified as Muhammad Wali, was abducted on Monday evening from outside his home in the city’s Lea Market area.
Hours later, officers recovered the boy’s body from a sack that had been thrown from a three-storey building in Punjabi Gali. Police shifted the body to Civil Hospital Karachi for a post-mortem examination.
Authorities said the family had reported the child missing after an extensive search, prompting police to register a kidnapping case at Napier Police Station.
South Karachi Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Asad Raza said police arrested the suspect, identified as Hamza, who was a neighbour of the victim.
Police alleged that the suspect sexually assaulted the child before killing him. Investigators are continuing their inquiry.
According to police, the suspect claimed at the time of his arrest that the crime was linked to a personal dispute. The victim’s parents denied having any enmity with anyone and demanded justice.
Muhammad Wali was the youngest of five siblings.
